View larger: Per's overview diagram: entry points (app, 1177.se, phone) lead to an impersonal and a personal symptom guide (with BankID), on to the advice line through a digital waiting room, and onward to self-care, 112, emergency care, web booking and digital or physical visits.
  • View larger: Guerrilla testing, round 2 (in Swedish): Title slide: “Gerillatestning av Symtomguiden (omg. 2) – Per Axbom, Anja Folkman och Rikard Bodin, Inera, mars 2019”.
  • View larger: How the test was done: Phone interviews with eight people around Sweden, of different ages and genders, looking at a PDF of the mobile views. Purpose: does the user understand how the chatbot works, what to do, and how to read the chatbot symbols?
  • View larger: Interview results: The interview notes as rows of color-coded sticky notes, one column per screen.
  • View larger: Screens with quotes: Mobile screens of the symptom guide with participants' comments in speech bubbles, such as “Should I talk or write with the robot?” and “This text makes me wonder if I can trust a bot. Feels scary.”
  • View larger: Results: In a crisis the user is often blocked and can't reason logically – so the text about when not to use the service must come first. The amount of text, plus logging in, makes the start long; users expect to get into the chat straight away.
  • View larger: Round 1 versus round 2: Comparison of the two test rounds: in February users couldn't tell whether they were talking to a person or a bot; in March it was clear it was a bot, but the start had become long.
  • View larger: A user journey across services: Scenario “suspected respiratory infection”: a woman with a long-lasting cold calls the advice line, is referred to testing she books herself, and gets the result through 1177's e-services – no infection, rest at home.
  • View larger: The right care for needs and urgency: Illustration of the services between self-care and acute care – app, symptom guide, personal advice, testing, booking, digital and physical visits – on top of shared medical decision support, catalog, documentation and records.

Part of Första linjens digitala vård: a digital symptom guide where people describe their symptoms to a chatbot and are guided to the right level of care – from self-care to 112. In 2019 a first proof of concept was built and tested with people across Sweden.

  • Two rounds of guerrilla testing of the chatbot, in February and March 2019. For the second round I and two interns I supervised from Nackademin's UX program, Anja Folkman and Rikard Bodin, interviewed eight people of different ages and genders around Sweden by phone, while they looked at the mobile views.
  • Key findings: in a crisis people can't reason logically, so the text on when not to use the service must come first – and every extra text and log-in step makes the start too long.
  • My overview of how an impersonal and a personal symptom guide connect to the advice line, digital waiting rooms and physical care, and user journeys showing how one person moves between the services.
