A recorded expert lecture in Swedish that opened one of the theme tracks at Digin, PTS’s network day on digital inclusion and accessibility, in spring 2020. I talked about the challenges, pitfalls and risks – and the opportunities – when technology changes faster than legislation. Then I took part live as the participants continued the discussion.

- Universal suffrage in Sweden: most people answer 1919 or 1921. Few know about 1945, and even fewer about 1989 – when Sweden stopped taking away the vote from many people with disabilities.
- People who managed fine ten years ago now struggle to apply for jobs, pay for parking or buy a ticket. The landscape changed without support for the transition.
- Accessibility is not just equal access to information: “at its core, accessibility is about the right, and the ability, to a dignified life.”
- Anxiety-inducing design (“Ten people are looking at this hotel room right now!”) and government chatbots that keep repeating “I don’t understand what you’re saying”.
- AI systems that can cement prejudice “in the guise of being superior”.
- Ended with four musts, among them including vulnerable people in the work, the right to opt out of automated assessment, and that “those who are least listened to are listened to most”.
- PTS published the film with Swedish captions, and also in an audio-described version.
